Tenzin Chopak plays South Hill Cider!

Like many musicians Tenzin, a long time local luminary in the singer-songwriter world, has not been playing many shows this year. We are very happy to be able to host him on one of our last shows of the year!

Come for the music, the cider and the tasty wood-fired pizza by Finger Lakes Flatbread!

Tenzin Chopak (vocals, guitar, piano, double bass, cello), is an artist and songwriter based in Ithaca, NY. The son of a minister and an artist, and the brother of a fellow musician and songwriter Greg Horne, Tenzin learned to love music in his father’s church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He studied voice, piano, and guitar in his childhood and youth, frequently performing his original music publicly. In 1999, after some years of a burgeoning devotion to the study of Tibetan language and religion, he traveled to North India. It was during his eight month stay there that he was given the name “Tenzin Chopak”. For the following twelve years, while continuing his study of Tibetan in upstate, NY, Tenzin kept music a quiet if not hidden part of his life.

Chopak now performs and records simply under his name “Tenzin Chopak”, and is known for composing and performing music across the genres of roots and progressive chamber folk, world beat influenced rock, and experimental and improvisational music including analog electronica (Moog) and trance mixed with instruments such as cello, piano, double bass, acoustic/electric guitars and voice. Most commonly, he performs with guitar and voice.

Here is some info on Raclette from Eater:
https://www.eater.com/2017/3/3/14784844/fondue-raclette-melted-cheese-trend

Raclette has more than one definition. Raclette is a Swiss cheese dish, a cultural land mark, the name of a cheese, a table top appliance, a dining experience, a great time!
Raclette is very popular in Europe, especially in the Swiss Alps and other ski regions. And that’s where it’s said Raclette came from.

Back in the days, Swiss shepherds from the French speaking Valais region needed to bring food up to the Alps that was relative cheap and wouldn’t spoil easily in the hot summer month. So they brought cheese and potatoes. While the potatoes roasted in the fire, a big piece of cheese was put close to the fire. Once it started melting the cheese was taken away and scraped of the cheese onto the baked potatoes. This was not only filling and nourishing but also delicious. In French ‘to scrape’ translates to ‘racler’ and this is where the term Raclette comes from.

Today, few houses have an open fire place, so to simulate the process we now have Raclette Melter that hold a block or half wheel of cheese under a heating element. Once melted, the cheese is being scraped off onto the prepared potatoes.

Thank you ‘Cheeses from Switzerland’ for helping to sponsor these nights!

Travis writes some of the most poignant and positive songs. His lyrical imagery and energetic music is both engaging and uplifting. He is an Ithaca College grad who has done tours on foot, makes his own cider, and also can do wonders as naturally on a Steinway as a thumb piano. Long-story-short if you haven't seen him, you should!
