John Bunker Special Event!

Apple trees - what they can offer to us as a way to connect to Nature and Ecology - A special evening with John Bunker

This is a very exciting event for ANYONE interested in apple trees! John Bunker is a living treasure - a walking encyclopedia on apples and their significance in our region. His passions include tracking down, identifying and preserving heirloom fruit varieties, particularly those originating in Maine. He has written two books: Not Far From the Tree and Apples and the Art of Detection.

He has lived in Palermo on Super Chilly Farm for the past 54 years, where he grows vegetables and rare fruit varieties with Cammy Watts. He worked for many years at Fedco Trees and started the Maine Heritage Orchard in Unity in 2012.

In the words of John: Apple trees, the most wonderful plant in the world!

Bring questions about apple trees! Some questions that John will be able to field in this talk are:

What can apples offer to us as a way to connect to nature and ecology?

What is your perspective on the current state of apple culture in the NorthEast?

Is there more or less interest in apples now than there was a generation ago?

Richie Stearns & Rosie Newton: South Hill Cider Community Concert Series

Come enjoy cider, delicious food, beautiful views and live music!

About the Artists:

Banjo player Richie Stearns and fiddler Rosie Newton grew up 150 miles and a few decades apart, but the fated combination of their unique skills, varied musical influences, and honest storytelling comes together to achieve their common goal: to create music people can connect with.

Richie earned himself a name with genre-bending Ithaca-based band the Horse Flies and through collaborations with Natalie Merchant and Donna the Buffalo. His career has spanned decades and he has toured internationally with legends like Bela Fleck, Pete Seeger, David Byrne, Billy Bragg + Wilco, and Joan Baez.

Rosie grew up steeped in roots music, touring with acclaimed folk-rock act the Mammals when she was still in high school. In addition to fronting the Ithaca's Rose & the Bros, in which she plays accordion, Rosie has played fiddle alongside the Duhks, Preston Frank, the Pearly Snaps, Red Dog Run, and the Evil City Stringband (the last two with Stearns).

Richie and Rosie's music finds itself at a junction of Americana, old-time, and folk, bringing a new sound to traditional music with trance-like, boundary pushing instrumental arrangements and angelic harmonies.

What is Raclette?

Raclette has more than one definition. Raclette is a Swiss cheese dish, a cultural landmark, the name of a cheese, a tabletop appliance, a dining experience, and a great time!

Raclette is very popular in Europe, especially in the Swiss Alps and other ski regions.

Back in the day, Swiss shepherds from the French-speaking Valais region needed to bring food up to the Alps that was relatively cheap and wouldn’t spoil easily in the hot summer months. So they brought cheese and potatoes. While the potatoes roasted in the fire, a big piece of cheese was put close to the fire. Once it started melting the cheese was taken away and scraped off the cheese onto the baked potatoes. This was not only filling and nourishing but also delicious. In French ‘to scrape’ translates to ‘racler’ and this is where the term Raclette comes from.
