What is Raclette?

Raclette has more than one definition. Raclette is a Swiss cheese dish, a cultural landmark, the name of a cheese, a tabletop appliance, a dining experience, and a great time!

Raclette is very popular in Europe, especially in the Swiss Alps and other ski regions.

Back in the day, Swiss shepherds from the French-speaking Valais region needed to bring food up to the Alps that was relatively cheap and wouldn’t spoil easily in the hot summer months. So they brought cheese and potatoes. While the potatoes roasted in the fire, a big piece of cheese was put close to the fire. Once it started melting the cheese was taken away and scraped off the cheese onto the baked potatoes. This was not only filling and nourishing but also delicious. In French ‘to scrape’ translates to ‘racler’ and this is where the term Raclette comes from.

Gallery Night in the Tasting Room

featuring art by Esmé Saccuccimorano and DiJon Spinning Vinyl!

About the artist:

Esmé Saccuccimorano: Integrating material approaches in painting, ceramics, print and glass, I seek to explore how ‘function’ and ‘meaning’ are moveable and permeable concepts, their fluidity contingent on the perceptive lens employed when approaching them. I draw on ideas of placebo, symbology, histories of ritual and talisman, and an interest in linguistic development—all of which share the common denominator of human-imposed function. As I work within this exploration, I have begun to question how our human conception of ‘function’ dictates the hierarchies of value we project onto the world, impacting how we interact with global ecologies and communities. How does our ability to recognize ‘function’ in our surroundings impact the worth we attribute to them? If our fluency in a language is dependent on our recognition of it as a functional system, what other systems of communication might we access if we expand our potential recognition of function?

About the music:

DiJon: Bringing a funky good time, DiJon is returning for another night of spinning records in the tasting room!! Two hours of boogie, disco, and funk for your listening pleasure.

EVENT CANCELED - Maddy Walsh and the Blind Spots at South Hill Cider/Golden Hour Music Series

SOUTH HILL CIDER HAS TO CANCEL THIS EVENT DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE UNFORTUNATELY BEYOND OUR CONTROL. OUR SINCERE APOLOGIES TO THE BAND AND TO ALL WHO WERE HOPING TO COME OUT TONIGHT.

Meet the band:

"Maddy Walsh & The Blind Spots, a tenured, original, five-piece moxy rock band steered by magnetic songstress and force of nature Maddy Walsh, celebrated its fifteen-year "bandiversary" with a sizzling east coast tour. Their recently released fourth studio album, Talk, showcases a matured grasp of songwriting, paired, as always, with the band's signature electrifying, high-energy performances characterized by soaring, powerhouse female vocals, luscious four-part harmonies, a library of modern and vintage key sounds, bold and inventive electric guitar stylings, and an incomparably tight rhythm section. Walsh has since released two solo albums, pandemic-era The Tunnel Sessions (2020), and Humanmade Thing (2021), the latter being released with a sold-out show at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY.

MW&TBS has shared festival and event bills with the likes of Lake Street Dive, Silversun Pickups, Valerie June, Rubblebucket, Jukebox the Ghost, Amy Helm, Donna the Buffalo, Sharon Jones (rest her soul), The Punch Brothers, Steve Earle, Anders Osborne, Blues Traveler, Eddie Money, and Rusted Root, among others, and they continue to show exponential growth as they expand their touring radius, gaining new fans and momentum with each crackling live performance.”

Current Lineup:

Maddy Walsh - vocals

Mike Suave - guitar

Rozlyn Menachof - backing vocals & keyboard

Hayden Frank - bass

Jeremy Bussmann - drums

The Makers at South Hill Cider/Community Concert Series

Come enjoy cider, delicious food, beautiful views, and live music at South Hill Cider!

The Makers are Lydia Garrison and Nate Silas Richardson. A shared obsession with the music of Mali, West Africa brought them together, and a potent creative chemistry emerged between them. They blend their voices, fiddle, banjo, and various guitars into an intricate weave of sometimes unclassifiable but always heartfelt, roots-based original songs, exploring the triumphs and tragedies along life’s beautiful & bumpy road. Often they are joined by Nate’s son Silas on drumset and Brian Dozorets on upright bass, elevating the music to new heights.

Lydia grew up in the Old Time, Cajun, and Zydeco music worlds, dancing and jamming and feeling the music swirling around her at music festivals in the North East and Louisiana. She has been inspired by songwriters and musicians such as Bear Fox, Keith Frank, Courtney Granger, Lucinda Williams, Emmy Lou Harris, Ginny Hawker, Rokia and Boubocar Traore, Zoumana Tereta, and Oumou Sangare. She did a musical study abroad in Bamako, Mali, West Africa in 2008, seeing up close the power that she'd felt as an audience member at the local FingerLakes GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance, which routinely brought musical acts from Mali.

Nate is a musical omnivore and a lifetime learner, with over 3 decades of experience touring, recording, teaching, and speaking. Guitar has been his passport to the world, from Kobuchizawa Japan, to Cape Breton Nova Scotia, and from Kailua Hawaii, to Gulu Uganda. He has performed key roles on records by 10ft Ganja Plant, Sim Redmond Band, John Brown’s Body, Samite, and many others. Whether its on a festival stage, in the classroom, or working his day job as a producer at Rep Studio in Ithaca NY, Nate is always making connections and lifting spirits.

Bring a receptive heart to a Makers show, and you'll dance, sing along, laugh and perhaps even shed a tear, all whilst being soothed by the intricate tones of these two multi-instrumentalists.

Surf Renegades at South Hill Cider/Community Concert Series

Come enjoy cider, delicious food, beautiful views, and live music at South Hill Cider!

Bob Keefe: Born in Los Angeles and raised in Fresno, California, Bob started playing at age 14.  His first professional gig at age 16 was with his own surf band.  He is the consummate lead guitarist and is in high demand as a guitar teacher.

Mike Tolomeo: Mike has been with the band for over seven years now and is the best "second" guitarist in the area.  He fills the space like the swell of a wave under a shortboard.

John White: An amazing bass player, who, along with drummer Mark Joyce, lay down an authentic surf groove.  Don't let his soft- spoken demeanor fool you: he is a killer bass player.

Mark Joyce: When Mark plays, he rocks the house.  He is comfortable playing all styles of music and keeps the Surf Renegades rockin' and true to form.  He and Bob have been playing together for over 15 years.

Donna the Buffalo at South Hill Cider/Golden Hour Music Series

Join us for the South Hill Cider Golden Hour Music Series!

Meet the artists:

Donna The Buffalo is not just a band, rather one might say that Donna The Buffalo has become a lifestyle for its members and audiences. Since 1989, the roots rockers have played thousands of shows and countless festivals including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Telluride, Austin City Limits Festival, Merle Fest, and Philadelphia Folk Festival.

They’ve opened for The Dead and have toured with Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Los Lobos, Little Feat, Jim Lauderdale, Rusted Root, and Railroad Earth to name a few. They also toured with Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen to help raise awareness about increased corporate spending in politics.

In 1991, the band started the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg, NY. The four day festival has become an annual destination for over 15,000 music lovers every year and was started as an AIDS benefit. It continues as a benefit for arts and education. To date, the event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and is now one of three Grassroots Festivals; the Bi-annual Shakori Hills fest in North Carolina and Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016 GrassRoots Culture Camp was introduced in Trumansburg, New York as four days of music, art, dance and movement workshops, including nightly dinners and dances.
